In terms of TV shows, this year was pretty average
Narrative
FrenchFollow Rupert Campbell-Black and Tony Badingham as their long-standing rivalry comes to a head. Coincidentally, Aidan Turner was already filming at Chavenage House (The Priory in Rivals). The same filming location was also used to feature Trenwith House in the 2015 BBC television adaptation of Poldark.
Rivals stands out as an absolute highlight
It’s a multi-layered work that certainly deserves a sequel. Conceptually it’s a serial, narratively it’s a satire, and stylistically it’s a period piece. The careful viewer will discover a message that, for the first time, is not superficial or heavily pushing political idealism, but rather seeks the truth.
Rivals is funny, smart, rough and funny
Not a single episode feels sloppy, unnecessary, or forced; The story and characters build magnificently to an outstanding score. The writing, the scenes, the dialogue, and the direction all serve the greater whole. The soundtrack appeals to any child of the 80s is a joy to watch.
Highly recommended, the best show of the fall
The always excellent David Tennant shines as a humanized villain, with Alex Hassle as an opposing force. Victoria Smurfette and Aidan Turner are a believable and well-matched broken couple. Audiences are witnessing the rise of some new stars, especially future nominee Bella McLean.
